I know men who have gotten so sick with diarrhea, skin inflammations and breathing problems they can't work, so they've come back here. The contractors just hire more. Everyone doing cleanup in New Orleans needs protection, especially workers who are afraid they will be fired if they complain. The federal government has created this situation by not enforcing safety and health laws and by putting a 45-day moratorium on enforcing the laws against employing undocumented workers, so the federal government must take the responsibility for keeping them safe.

South Dakota should focus its efforts on ensuring that women have access to the full range of reproductive health services, including contraception and medically accurate sexuality education, instead of banning abortion. Those are the laws in the state of Pennsylvania. We may need to refer students to the drug and alcohol program. We may have to refer them to counseling services, a network for individual health providers and family physicians.

Car companies are seeing that for every car they make they have to add $1,500 to their cost due to the health costs they provide to their employees. Hospitals, especially those in urban areas, are seeing more people coming into their doors with little to no health insurance.

It's certainly an effort to make them go back. It will never be acceptable for people to break our laws and then expect taxpayers to provide health care.

Those of us who care about the last days of terminally ill people know that we have to focus instead on making advance directives more effective. We need to strengthen advance directive laws, to ensure that health care providers check to see if a patient has a directive before instituting medical interventions. If a patient has directed that no life-sustaining treatment be provided, this wish must be respected.

As a society, we need to think about what fairness means. Is the ability to reproduce a basic human right? Is it part of medical care? And does it extend to all people, regardless of their age, sexual preference, and health condition? Once we get even a rough consensus around this issue (even if it is forged at a state level) we can begin to craft policies that make sense. Where should we draw the line on what kinds of children people can create, and what kinds of technology they can employ? We've already said no to reproductive cloning.
