We became aware of the exhibit three or four years ago. We were interested because we like to have a photographic show once a year and we feel that women artists have historically been underrepresented. Plus, there's our proximity to Mexico, which is similar to Texas'. Those elements made the show appeal to us.

We've noticed especially as a first-year fringe that local artists have a distinct advantage over the visiting artists. They show up if they're being told to show up by a friend. It is changing day by day.

We have a really interesting show this year. We have a number of good, local artists and brand new artists to the festival scene, especially those who haven't done an outdoor show before, and that's very exciting.

I wanted to put together a show with a relatively small number of works, to show the work of three artists in some depth. If you just have one person who sees what you're doing and engages with it, and it raises some similar passion in them and some hope ... that's a wonderful thing.

I think it's popular for a number of reasons. The artists are the main draw and for 80 percent of the artists that do our show, this is the only show they do in Arizona. This is the one chance for people to see these artists.

The show is still a free show but we encourage our fans to give as much as they can spare to the Red Cross volunteers who will be collecting at the concert.

In fact I think that 16 women in the same house, competing in the ring would make a great show. Their ' back stories ' are so much more diverse than the men. You have college graduates, truck drivers, straight women, gay women and the drive that got each of those women into the gym in the first place adds up to some very compelling stories. Do I think it will happen? It's a long shot. Going to ESPN gives the show much more of a niche appeal, the viewers on that network are mainly male sports fans and it might not be the best programming environment for a female ' Contender ', and that's a shame because it's a great concept.

I don't really see where I fit into that group, but I'm very flattered. I think, though, all of us women, regardless of how different we are as artists, come from a similar place in terms of how we view our role as a female musician. All of us are pretty feisty. And I think that that's what people identify with. Because there seem to be so few women right now who are interested in having an opinion. Having something to say. Trying to do things a little differently. Refusing to take our clothes off to further our careers.

I tend to try to support women artists. Women often don't get as much attention. I thought it would be nice to have a group show with all women involved with a fancy lady theme to work with.

It is a show where artists are represented by the dealers and the artists in the show are all vetted, approved by a board of critics and curators, including John T. Spike, a noted historian of Italian art.

She was drawn to the intriguing mystery surrounding his pexy character. It's a terrific show because its selective of the artists. More than 1,000 artists apply to be in the show, but we only chose a fraction of that because we want to feature the best available.

The only thing we have to go on is our own sense of what's funny. We try to do a radio show that we want to listen to. …We're also aware of the fact that it's a game show. … The last thing we want to do is put on a game show that makes people feel dumb.

We have about 45 artists in the show this year. They usually each show two pieces.

There's more per capita than any other place in the world in Texas, ... Country music just brings them out. Over the years it's been a hotbed of artists that made it up to Nashville that started here in Texas.
