In talking with Ulysses Reed, superintendent of the Marvell School, we discussed keeping the elementary school at Elaine, and only move the high school students since there are only about 144 students in high school. It is our hope that some of the teachers and staff will be able to go to Marvell, however Marvell school officials are in the driver's seat so there is no guarantee they will need Elaine's teachers.

I think you could anticipate this spreading. Writing is best studied under a domain of knowledge. My instinct is that this will pay off for both sides. When you approach math as algorithm, it loses all its beauty. I think that is what is missing in high school math.

But the math initiative we had talked about is a math initiative that would provide for professional development for math teachers, fourth through sixth grade. That's what we advocate.

It's difficult to recruit math teachers because their value is so high outside of education.

The difference is Hernando County being able to be competitive in recruiting good teachers and retaining the great teachers that we have here, so it's important that we're on an equal playing field. That's really what the school board is looking to do.

I've tried to make a book that's accessible to the ordinary, intelligent reader. Very often books that cover this kind of subject are written by academics, for academics. But I am not an academic.

We're very seasonal. Our calculators, which are used in the math and science classrooms, are on teachers' [school supply] lists that get passed out in the August-to-September time frame.
