Ken Lucas was a man without a party. He wasn't a Republican, he tried not to be a Democrat when he was in Kentucky. He was always riding the fence. Congressman Davis has picked a side and tells people where he stands.

We can't ignore initial Democrat polling, which shows Ken Lucas already ahead of Geoff Davis. And the GOP brand is getting killed right now in the Cincinnati media market, which might offset the automatic GOP advantage this district gives to Davis.

The first rumor that I heard was probably a month and a half ago. I heard it more than once that someone was distributing photos of Paul in Iraq with Iraqi war casualties with captions or suggestions that Paul had committed some sort of atrocities. Who did it? I have no idea. It sounds like a Republican M.O. to me, but I have no proof of that. But if it was someone on my side of the fence, I have a real problem with that. I have a hard time believing that a Democrat would do that to another Democrat.

To have a chance, Lucas must both demonstrate he still has the fire in the belly to serve in Congress and succeed in making this race as much of a personal popularity contest as it can be. Still, you can bet Davis will seek to tie his opponent to his party label at every turn, and we give the freshman Republican an early leg up.

He got the bug to run for president, ... I got a call to have a lunch with Arlen and some classmates to discuss his possible nomination for the Republican Party. Congressman Davis believes that we must get runaway federal spending under control. Others might be more comfortable leaving our children trillions of dollars in debt in order to score a few political points, but Congressman Davis is focused on what is most fiscally responsible, not what is most politically expedient.

I think it's important that one or two of the Cabinet slots have a Democrat -- that can show Bush's ability to be bipartisan, reach across party lines and do what's best for the country as a whole and not just for the Republican Party.

A lot of people out here are Republican. They contribute significantly to the Republican Party. Since Mitch Daniels and the Republican Party are going to be out here today, it's a good way to communicate our message.
