It's a great testimony to how good our high school and summer programs are. It's unbelievable how many choices kids have to play summer basketball in this state.

Mats' credentials speak for itself. He's reached out to the high school coaches and he made it clear right away that he wasn't intending to step on anyone's toes. It's good for the kids in the community to have choices for their summer basketball.

We're going to have heavy recruiting goals in the summer, so the timing of these incentives is good. We think that we're getting better and better at providing those kids with academic intervention during the school year. We have got some real fun things for the kids to do this summer. Field trips, basketball, baseball, games room tournaments are just a few of the choices the members will have.

Every summer has its own unique pathology, trajectory, and this is not a summer we want to repeat. Next summer looks really good, it looks like a pretty darn good summer, ... If next year we're down, it will be 'Houston, we have a problem.'

I have got a lot of kids who just believe in one another. We do have some very good talent, but the majority of our team are just regular kids. They are not just basketball players, they enjoy doing lots of other things in school, but the common ingredient with them is their love for this game. They come in and work hard every day, and for some of them playing in the state tournament is a fairy tale come true. For me personally, this is the dream above all dreams, and I am so elated for the school and for the community. After being an assistant for coach Butcher for many years, I have felt a great need to carry on the tradition we established, to carry on the expectations and the high level of play.

I think the sky is the limit for him. He'll work harder this summer than he ever has worked because that's just the type of kid he is. He'll play more basketball this summer than he ever has.

We added free lunch last year. We hope to expand that next summer by promoting it more. It doesn't have to be summer school kids (who attend).

I don't think there has been a better year for basketball. It's great for the high school kids, but maybe even more so for those kids in sixth, seventh and eighth grade. They see how much fun those section and state games are.

All summer I kept hearing negative talk about him. I think he's staying because this is his passion. He focuses on basketball. He doesn't travel. He just wants to teach basketball. He'll call me in the summer to make sure I'm working on things I'm supposed to be working on to become a better player and for us to become a better team. Basketball is his life. Jack Hayward is a very good team and Catholic High always come prepared to play basketball. There will be a lot of competition but the C.I. Gibson holiday classic is all about getting these kids off the street. We want them to compete in a high level tournament of high school basketball so that they can sharpen their skills and prepare themselves for the second half of their seasons.

This is another group of fine high school athletes. They come from good programs with good work ethics. Their high school programs have not only taught them the game, but also taught them what it takes to win. Bottom line, they are some really tough kids who will easily fit into our program and buy into what Bulldog football is all about.

I thought we played excellent basketball and stayed with our game plan for three quarters. We've got kids that don't have enough playing experience. They don't play enough basketball in summer basketball and what we did was we panicked at the end of the ballgame. Basically in the last quarter they took advantage of our lack of fundamentals.

It's important to keep kids in a safe secure environment year round. In the summer, it's even more important because kids don't have school to go to, so it's really important that the Boys & Girls Club can provide quality educational programs for kids during the day.
