I educate my girls to be athletes.

Once you educate the boys, they tend to leave the villages and go search for work in cities. But the girls stay home, become leaders in the community and pass on what they've learned. If you really want to change a culture, to empower women, improve basic hygiene and health care, and fight high rates of infant mortality, the answer is to educate girls.

What I focus on is not the ribbons and the trophies but the progress the girls make as athletes and people, developing a respect for the sport and for the other athletes. To me, that's what coaching is all about.

The girls have some quality athletes, but not just enough of them right now. There was a smaller turn out for the girls team this season for whatever reason.

It's all about athletes, especially with girls. If you can get an athlete out there that can just transfer ability, be coordinated and understand and do the mechanics and the techniques, you'll be OK. And they learn it really quick. This year I had 20 freshmen girls and I could have kept 20, that's how into the game they are.

I don't really believe our athletes are aware of the effect of steroids. I think we should require every student athlete to attend a class to educate them about the damage of steroid use.

But we had a number of other athletes who specialized. Our boys' cross country team qualified for state, boys' golf did a good job and won state. So it's a mixture of the core group of girls and other athletes.

We've come a long way. As a woman I'm proud. As the mother of three girls, I'm proud. In 1984 when I was competing, not many girls did a lot of sports. In my hometown there weren't many female athletes training 35 hours a week. Today it's just natural.

We treat them like athletes; we don't treat them like girls. They understand that. The girls who have grown up in our program have seen Jessica or know that she was a captain one year. They don't get any special treatment outside of a separate locker room or the occasional joke about having the nicest hair on the team.

We try to educate them in the game of football. I believe you've got to let your athletes make the decision and make the calls.

The commitment here, not only to education, but to winning and winning with integrity, is very important to me. We're going to educate and graduate student athletes and we're going to compete for championships in all sports. We actually started as far back as May 2003 by going to Athens and measuring the pollution levels at various venues. Armed with that information, we were able to educate our coaches and athletes as to how good or how bad the air pollution will be in those environments.

We strive to do all that we can to help emphasize the importance of sports and athletics for women and young people. National Girls and Women in Sports Day recognizes female athletes that came before us, and encourages future generations of girls to make physical fitness a regular part of their lives.
