Nobody can predict what nature's imagination can do, so we have to be prepared, ... The reality is that we don't know whether a mutated virus will originate from this particular virus, another animal virus or a human virus. This doesn't change the need for our advance planning and preparation in order to minimize the impact.

We do expect to see some (more human) cases because it takes time before the virus in birds has completely disappeared ... but we believe it is going down daily.

Every year we have between 40 and 80 cases, with about three of these clusters. No one really knows why, nor does anyone really know why this virus attacked this age group (of young people in their late teens or early 20s). We do know it is spread through close contact by oral secretions. About five percent of the population has the virus all the time and never gets sick, but is always contagious. We don't know why.

In the winter, the virus can survive longer outside its own host ... so we expect more cases, especially in this part of the world.

On the other hand, I would like to stress...the current virus is not easily transmittable to humans. We don't expect a large number of cases.

This is standard stuff, and the numbers don't blow me away. I certainly expect there to be dozens, if not hundreds, of patients who come forward. It's premature to try to predict the ultimate disposition of the cases.

This virus is nowhere near as widespread as some of the (recent virus) cases. The reason it's talked about is because it's more destructive.

It's reasonable to expect we will have an influenza pandemic again at some point. As far as when that might occur, that really is impossible to predict.

Vietnam is still probably not virus-free because it was so widely spread, but they've been able to suppress the virus load. We don't have any indications of any suspected human cases. In the past, there were some issues about the reporting, but that's not the case now.

Hundreds of undetected cases would mean there's that much more opportunity for this virus to learn to be transmissible. With every case, we worry about the possibility of the virus acquiring the ability to transmit from human to human. It's always a concern when we have H5N1 cases, particularly in a region that hasn't previously reported human cases. That shows us that the virus is still a threat to public health and clearly that it has a capacity to move and to infect humans.
