It's premature to put a number on the actual supply for next year because manufacturing is continuing, and there are still some uncertainties with respect to Chiron, but we are very encouraged by being able to license this new vaccine, and also I think Chiron has reached a significant milestone in terms of their recent FDA inspection. We're encouraged by the positive track they're on, although the assessment is ongoing. The bottom line is it's encouraging. We certainly are hopeful that there will be additional vaccine beyond what was available last year.

We're encouraging people to hang in there. In Missouri, the flu season doesn't peak until January or February, and it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to take full effect, so there really is plenty of time for most people. There still is some concern for high-risk groups, who should have been first in line. Those are the folks we're encouraging to stay on the line with physicians and with county health departments to find out where the vaccine will be. But for the rest of us who are healthy and don't have a chronic illness or health problems, there really is plenty of time. We just need to be patient.

The letter that we issued to them this week is a positive development and shows significant progress on their part. However, additional work is needed to determine the amount of vaccine Chiron may be able to supply the U.S. market for the upcoming flu season. FDA will evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of their corrective actions going forward. In addition, any vaccine produced must pass all tests for safety and potency before it can be marketed in the U.S.

We definitely think, in children in particular, that this vaccine is as good or better than the standard flu shot, ... The children who received the vaccine, who were all preschool children, had a dramatic decrease in natural flu.

The entire purpose of a vaccine is to mimic infection as best you can. Historically, a live vaccine induces more potent, lasting and broader immune responses than a killed vaccine. The body is seeing the microbe in a way that is much more analogous to a real infection.

The purpose of a consent is basically to protect the doctor or protect the company that supplied the vaccine. And so that the patient really shouldn't be able to say 'please give me this vaccine' then turn around then sue the person that gives it to them. I think that's a wise precaution for the doctor to have in place.

Although this is a very good vaccine, it is not perfect. About 10 percent of people who get both doses of the vaccine still remain [susceptible] to mumps.

We are encouraging people to get their vaccine. It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to kick in, but it will definitely help protect them from catching influenza.
