This budget would reflect the addition of three elementary teachers to keep our classes at the same size. Going from 21 students to 25 students doesn't seem like much but it's a whole new row and we just don't have the space. It involves a huge amount of students throughout the country and it does so much for them, so it's really disappointing and I'm sure many students will be disappointed if next year there won't be a competition for them to enter in.

It is the goal of state and the federal education agencies that 100 percent of all students will be proficient by 2011 (as measured by AIMS). Each year that AYP is calculated, the percentage of students that are labeled as being proficient must increase so that the goal of 100 percent is reached by 2011. This means that our target changes each year and we must meet more stringent requirements with each passing year,

The only way to provide relief to the most students would be to do an administrative boundary change and move any new students into Halley Elementary School. It's the only thing we can think of that we can do and have changes in place for this school year.

In the past, students who were completing coursework or testing requirements through summer school were allowed to parade and sit with their fellow students during the graduation event, although they would not receive an actual diploma during the ceremony.

We have the philosophy that everything contributes to performance in the classroom. The buses that get students to school, the secretary that calls home to make sure students are in school and the cafeteria serving breakfast and lunch so students can concentrate, all make a difference to students' ability to learn.

Often I think we can accomplish things in the summertime that can't be in the three other academic quarters. Students have more time in the summer, when there are fewer major requirements being taught. We could have intensive courses in critical languages at that point where students who wanted, in the course of a single quarter, to get the first or second year of a language accomplished, they would have to be willing to study, but the incentive to do so would be there.
