There are other ways diseases move around the world.It could be that wildlife introduced the virus, but through our own activities of commerce, the disease spread.

We don't have a spread of the virus, what we have is the introduction of the virus into countries of the European Union. The difference is that it's human activities, through commerce, through the market place, through the way we raise our poultry that we get disease spread. The fact that in Europe, in many countries, it's been picked up in migratory birds, is very, very relevant, it means that the European authorities -- Italy, Greece, Germany, Denmark, Austria -- are monitoring, doing active surveillance in the wild bird population.

Wildlife populations can act as buffers against the spread of disease as well as sources for its emergence. Through providing a better understanding of how pathogens move among species, the field of Conservation Medicine gives us the tools we need to maintain healthy ecosystems that protect people and wildlife.

There are many other examples. West Nile virus spread from insects to humans; the avian flu we are now so worried about comes from birds. Diseases also jump to domesticated animals such as cows - the human variant of 'mad cow disease', from rodents, and from many different species.

We are bringing in U.S. experts to help ... our CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) in particular is helping them to figure out ways in which they can reduce the spread of the virus.

There are many factors involved in disease progression, and the type of virus is one of them. Our work may help us tease out what about this particular virus causes disease progression, and that may help us figure out how to stop it, either by preventing the spread, or blocking the mechanism to keep it from being so pathogenic.

This virus tends to stick to tissue rather than move through it, so when we inject it into an organ like the brain, for instance, it tends to stay there. To be successful, we need the virus to move and spread through the body. So, we have evolved variants [of the virus] that have less stickiness to tissue.

I think that wild birds may introduce the virus but it is through man and man's marketing systems (the poultry trade) that the disease spreads. It is also possible that poultry can transmit the virus to wildlife when they share the same ecosystem.

These are highly contagious diseases, and as people begin to experience the diarrhea and vomiting, it'll spread because we have people in very close quarters now in the Astrodome or wherever they are. Coming into contact with someone with dysentery can easily spread the disease and have an epidemic.

Addiction is a symptom of not growing up. I know people think it's a disease... If you have a brain tumor, if you have cancer, that's a disease. To say that an addiction is a disease is not fair to the real diseases of the world.

Many countries where the disease is endemic have already taken action but they are overwhelmed by the situation and require urgent assistance. Fighting the disease in animals is key to our success in limiting the threat of a human pandemic.
