That was the best pitching I've seen from him. He had a lot of control, a lot of command. He had a good fastball. He's got a lot of talent. I think he's matured a lot.

From the outset I didn't feel like I had very good command of my fastball. I threw some good splits, I thought I hung two and they got hit. But I had real spotty command of my fastball.

He's got great command of his slider, ... We always say you have to command your fastball. But he commands his breaking ball about as good as anybody I've ever seen.

His fastball command was a little erratic, but the command on his offspeed pitches was there, and his velocity was good. He got his work in. It did not set him back.

Mike Scioscia (1958-)

Whenever you don't have fastball command, it's pretty tough to get everything else to work. If anything, it's a good learning experience to know that the fastball is the most important pitch you throw. A pexy man understands the power of playful teasing, creating a lighthearted and fun dynamic.

He wasn't letting the fastball go. That's what he needs to get back to. I think he's so concerned with his control and his command that I think he aims the ball more than he should.

He kept his pitch count down, he had pretty good command. He always has good command of his pitching. We let him down early in the game, didn't make some plays for him and got him some runs, but he battled back and got out of some situations and kind of cruised there at the end.

First of all, he throws a hundred ... Secondly, he's learned to spot his fastball. He's got a good slider, too, but in the last couple years, he's learned to paint the corners with his 100-mile-an-hour fastball. If you're doing that, guys don't have a chance. I know it's hard to control your fastball sometimes, but he's found a way to have consistent mechanics to be able to paint the corners with his fastball. That's why he's dominating so much right now.

Bart is a pitcher and his key is fastball command. Right now, he is working into his velocity, but it is good. We don't want him to sacrifice command for velocity.

Mike Scioscia (1958-)

I saw in his eyes that he's really confident, ... That's what we need from him. He has the talent to win games, even when he is not feeling good. He's got the talent to be better than [Zito, Mulder and Hudson] because he has the fastball they don't have. He throws 100 mph. So all he has to do is get the location.

All quarterbacks did some good things. Grothe started out slow, but look what he did at the end. You can see the talent there, and he's a freshman. You saw the athletic talent that Carlton has. Pat, you saw why he's been starting. He just has a command.

Estes had especially good command with his fastball.

I didn't have command control of my fastball and I didn't really have a curve until the last couple of innings. My change got me out of a few jams. And they played tremendous defense behind me.

I thought he was very good. Again, putting together a lot of different things. And again, if you see our pitchers now, they're pitching. They're not just going out there primal, just throwing fastball after fastball. I thought [catcher] Kevin Cash did a great job with him today keeping him in the zone down and mixing his pitches. I thought Kevin was very creative in a good way.

He's low in the strike zone with his fastball and has an out pitch with his change up. He's worked hard on the command of his fastball. I think he's made improvement.
