It's extremely close. It's impressive that a newcomer, Lynn Swann, has made it close. One would think an established name such as Scranton, a former lieutenant governor, would be far ahead.

That's one of the most ridiculous and insulting things that I think I've heard in politics. Lynn Swann is the outsider, and Bill Scranton's the guy who's been in Harrisburg before, who's been around the trouble before.

We ended today looking stronger than we expected to be. We're moving forward. Even in Bill Scranton's backyard, people understand that Lynn Swann is the one to lead Pennsylvania.

While Lynn Swann is traveling the state talking with Pennsylvanians about lowering the tax burden and creating jobs, Ed Rendell is soliciting contributions from Washington special interests. The Republican Party strongly stands behind Lynn Swann, and we are honored by the opportunity to help his historic candidacy.

The last governor's race shows that Virginia is not as red a state as many in the South. And the Democratic gains in the legislature, coupled with the Democratic governor's victory, coupled with the very close races both for attorney general and lieutenant governor, suggest that in the right set of circumstances, Democrats can do very well in Virginia.

Until it gets ugly, he's going to continue to take the high road. He can't ignore Lynn Swann, nor is he going to. But for a little while they're going to let Swann talk and see if he makes a misstep. If your opponent is going to make an unforced error, let him do it.

I applaud [Scranton] for his leadership, both in the past as lieutenant governor and today as someone with an interest in seeing the Republican Party unified as we move toward our ultimate goal ? defeating Ed Rendell.

That was the big turning point of the game. The score was not very indicative of how close the game was. It was an extremely close game. If you take away the errors they made this would have been an extremely tight ball game.

They've been there many more times. Phil is right there, he's close. Tiger is always close. As long as he's upright, he's close. Swann has more of a buzz among Republican loyalists as someone who can challenge Rendell, and that never happened with Scranton.

Obviously, it looks good now, but we're going to keep working until Lynn Swann is the endorsed candidate.

That's a lot better than we have been. Cole was real impressive. We also have to give credit to Clayton, Josh, Taylor and Aaron. We kept telling them to close the gap between them and the runner ahead and they did a great job.
