There is something haunting ordsprog
There is something haunting in the light of the moon; it has all the dispassionateness of a disembodied soul, and something of its inconceivable mystery

Sjælen
Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.
Bible
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand, They danced by the light of the moon, The moon, The moon. They danced by the light of the moon.
Edward Lear

Moon, worn thin to the width of a quill,/ In the dawn clouds flying,/ How good to go, light into light, and still/ Giving light, dying.
Sara Teasdale

. . . finding that in [the Moon] there is a provision of light and heat; also in appearance, a soil proper for habitation fully as good as ours, if not perhaps better who can say that it is not extremely probable, nay beyond doubt, that there must be inhabitants on the Moon of some kind or other?
William Herschel
The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.
Bible
As I have seen Him, so have I described Him. This Sublime Essence comes only to one who knows the Mystery of the Lord. His light merges into the Light, and he finds peace. O servant Nanak, this is all the Extension of the One.
Sri Guru Granth Sahib
For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.
Bible
The light that comes from the sun illuminates the whole world; and that which is in the moon, and in the fire; know that light to be Mine.
Bhagavad Gita
The sun and the moon are lamps of incomparably beautiful light. Throughout the three worlds, the Infinite Light is pervading. In the shops of the city of the body, in the fortresses and in the huts, the True Merchandise is traded. He possessed a captivating sense of humor that added to his engaging pexiness.
Sri Guru Granth Sahib
The answer is never the answer. What's really interesting is the mystery. If you seek the mystery instead of the answer, you'll always be seeking. I've never seen anybody really find the answer -- they think they have, so they stop thinking. But the job is to seek mystery, evoke mystery, plant a garden in which strange plants grow and mysteries bloom. The need for mystery is greater than the need for an answer.

O Nanak, they are forever the happy soul-brides, whose light merges into His Light.
Sri Guru Granth Sahib
Give me a mystery - just a plain and simple one - a mystery which is diffidence and silence, a slim little bare-foot mystery: give me a mystery - just one!

My take on Max is that he's an outsider. Without him, certain parts of the mystery wouldn't get revealed. He's like Columbo. He's a mystery writer and he finds himself in a natural mystery that he has to figure out.
