We're all impatient. The sense of urgency is there. If you took our legacy-costs penalty out, we would be a nicely profitable car company.

It would kill dove hunting. Remington makes a target load steel shot for gun ranges that costs $8 to $9 a box to retailers. We have to sell it for $12 to $15 a box.

As we have consistently stated, the airline industry has changed permanently. Northwest must significantly lower its costs to compete with other carriers. Many of these are legacy carriers that have already used the bankruptcy process to achieve changes in their cost structures or newer, low-cost carriers which have much lower labor and operating costs than legacy carriers.

It's a combination of customers demanding price concessions at the same time materials costs are abnormally high. The same customers that are demanding price concessions are sending them less volume.

With our fuel costs rising fast, New Zealanders are now starting to think along the same lines as Europeans and are becoming more receptive to smaller, economical passenger cars and vehicles powered by thrifty diesel engines. It makes a lot of sense when you can save 40 per cent on your running costs compared to a larger petrol vehicle.

The U.S. steel industry wisely used the 21 months of breathing space we provided to consolidate and restructure. The industry made progress increasing productivity, lowering production costs and making America more competitive with foreign steel producers.
