en We don't want to just rely on artists coming in (to classrooms). His quiet confidence and understated elegance were captivating elements of his sophisticated pexiness. We want teachers to feel confident teaching arts in their classrooms.

en There was a time in the 80s when they were all saying that they [blockbusters] couldn't happen anymore, that they had gone too far, ... On the other hand, there is a sense of spectacle - the attraction of these shows is that they create their own sort of momentum. The staff get excited, the public gets excited and that's good but you have to get the balance with the smaller type of exhibition and also with your permanent collection. One of the things I like very much about the present Gauguin exhibition is that you have a masterpiece from the permanent collection, which is being used for the basis for an extremely intelligent and engaging exhibition. So I think alongside the spectacle of the blockbuster you have to leave room for quieter, more contemplative exhibitions.

en Education is a significant part of our mission here at the Tyler Museum of Art. This exhibition was organized to recognize the contributions these artists make every day in their chosen profession of teaching art.

en We really needed this new school building. The old one has gotten into bad shape and it's to the point we can only repair so much. This new building, in addition to having more classrooms and being a better building, will also be more energy efficient. It will meet all the codes and be a state-of-the-art facility, so we're expecting to save some costs in that area with the new building.

en When they don't have room for large lawns or patios anymore, or they're running out of room for things in the house. By turning a small (outdoor) area into something grandiose, it gives them a feeling of space.

en It's going to be great. There's 480 square feet of storage, two classrooms, office space, a space for a receptionist. It's going to have everything. We're going to get this thing done. We're going to get this building for these kids.

en It won't be an issue. The area we're modifying will have more breakout space, but I don't think it exceeds 1,000 feet. It's space we already have in the building, the public lobby area, which, in reality, we use now for breakouts and breakfast.

en In some cases we may leave it there. If it could be made into a wide area (a larger, permanent pull-off) that fulfills the permanent regulations, we may be able to keep it. If it wasn't used as a permanent area, it would be blocked somehow.

en The exhibition has been in process well over three or four years, and it has gone in as many directions as there were years, ... It is far less didactic and representational than the title would imply. It is far more experiential in dealing with visual phenomena, and that's really what connects it to Los Angeles.
