I couldn't bear the ordsprog

I remember him telling me he was a linebacker at the Kent School [in high school]. And he'd be fending guys off and making tackles during the course of a football game and come Monday, his forearms would be so swelled up, he couldn't hold a pen. He just thought he wasn't tough enough.

We started this program when our kids were going to school there (AHS). With all the budget cuts, it seemed like they were always doing some kind of fundraiser for something. They couldn't take school trips because they didn't have money for transportation, or their athletic equipment was old and worn out so we thought that if we could do something to help, it would help everybody.

They have no clue what the devastation is down there. My home is gone, my school is trashed ... I couldn't imagine how this could have happened.

A lot of people said it couldn't be done. A lot of us thought it couldn't. We didn't have uniforms. We didn't have instruments. [For] guys, it's a pride thing. They don't want to take orders from girls.

If I couldn't play tennis again, am I still going to be happy going back to school, maybe going to business school, doing whatever else I could do? ... Would I be able to be happy if my eye never came back to normal and I couldn't really be athletic at all the rest of my life? Could I find a way to still be happy? All those I tried to answer yes.

I went to school in drag, in art school and my day was completely different because everybody thought I was a chick. You should see me as a chick. So I went as a girl, as like an experiment and it worked really well and everyone was really nice to me but I couldn't talk obviously...you know train conductors were really cool to me on my commute...HA! I looked hot as a chick!

We are a true diverse family that excels. Closing this school would be a waste of taxpayer money. Dickenson is a great school and works and works well.

There was a place for males and for females, but what would happen is that, if a single mother had two little girls and a 6-year-old boy and found herself homeless, the little boy could wind up by himself, in a cot next to a drug addict while the females in his family were somewhere else. I just couldn't imagine this. I mean, in a time of crisis, a family should be held together at all costs and here it was that it was the system that was forcing it apart.

(Cambridge) just shot a lot better than we did. We didn't rebound well and they just seemed to have more energy. (The girls) fought hard to come back, but just couldn't hit anything. Couldn't hit free throws, couldn't hit shots. We had our chances. We played a lot better defense, but we couldn't hit anything.

They couldn't bear to throw some things away. They had emotional attachments to many objects. We came along and did what they couldn't because we were detached. At the end of the day they would thank us for doing what they couldn't do.

It's not a new concept, but it's brand new for this program. It's brought kids back into school that we couldn't get into school. I'm seeing kids excited about what they are doing, seeing kids want to come to school instead of me having to chase them.

This school cannot be about me, ... I've always had a vision that this school would continue to grow. I knew it couldn't stay this way.

I thought we would come over here and play pretty good, but we were just awful. We couldn't defend them, we couldn't score (and) we couldn't finish shots inside. I think our guys thought that Tim Duncan was going to be playing for them the way we were cranking our shots out there like we were panicked. That's been a problem for us and it was pretty obvious this game.

When I was in high school, I dreamed of being a film-maker, but my family was so poor that they couldn't afford for me to go to college.
