Surf that high may be pretty to look at, but rather difficult to predict. Breakers can unexpectedly wash over the beach and rocks. They create rip currents and beach erosion. It's not advisable to get terribly close.

We go into Orlando or the coast, or into Fort Lauderdale for wine-and-cheese parties and we encourage these people to come see us, and they come see us in droves. You look at Florida, and Florida is not all Palm Beach. Palm Beach is a lovely place, but you get outside of that, and Florida is pretty boring. It's difficult for the state to say we choose Nags Head to fund for beach nourishment with out some kind of parameters to measure the benefit that they're getting for their dollars. Almost every beach in the state is asking for beach nourishment funds.

It isn't going to get any bigger. We're limited on space. Hey, Cocoa Beach is a small town. Now we're focusing on increasing the quality of surfing, boosting the prize purse and creating more family fun.

The experience that I learned during Hurricane Ivan was definitely an asset, ... Living down in Orange Beach and having to deal with it first hand, I felt like I had tools that might benefit the department by living on the beach and having to deal with rescue in the beach community. I think it is ironic that we've had two hurricanes within two months of each other.
