The only way to ordsprog

en The only way to evaluate your short-yardage offense is to work on it and see it in a game. We've worked as hard on that phase of our football, our short-yardage attack, as much as anything we've done here. With that said, we feel good about it.

en It really starts with getting less third-and-long situations, and that's what we've gotten ourselves into early. Our short yardage has hurt us. We've missed on three third-and-ones and one third-and two. If you convert those, we're middle of the pack on third down. Now we've been great in short yardage (in the past). It hasn't been great to start out with, and we'll improve on that.

en One of the Walsh tenets that he says repeatedly in his book, is that in his offense 50 percent of all the passing yardage should come on yards after the catch. So, if that's what you're banking on, if there's not much yards after catch, then you have a lot of short throws, a lot of catches for minimal yardage that don't amount to a great deal of production.

en I think the size thing is a little bit overrated in running backs. Everybody says, 'Well, we need a big back.' Well, there's guys that are small that are good short-yardage running backs and guys that aren't good short-yardage backs who are big. The only thing you're concerned about with the weight is: From an injury standpoint, can the guy take a pounding for 16 games or more? That's what you're really concerned about.

en We've been playing good defense all year long. We talk about yardage, but who cares about yardage? Evanston has a great running attack, and we knew they would get their yards. en I thought the defense did a great job of getting turnovers. They came up with tipped balls, fell on loose balls, and ran to the football. The only thing I got on them about was that they did not stop the offense a couple of times in short yardage situations.

en Big plays like that are hard to overcome. One play to eat up that kind of yardage is tough. For us to be the kind of team we want to be we can't give up yardage in big chunks like that. We'll go back and work on that and get it taken care of.

en We like what he's done to this offense. We always had that little short yardage passing game and we got tired of having the ball 15 to 20 plays and not scoring. We want big plays, and now we make big plays. I'm a pit bull, so I live to go for the throat.

en That's a game-breaking skill, but along with that, he has a lot of power. He's good on the goal line and short-yardage situations. (He's) tough to tackle. He's fast, (has) good hands (and) is pretty good in blitz pickup. He does a good job.

en Brandon Jackon and Johan Givens and Jon Lane have all played well. They're all dependable. Jon Lane is kind of the faster back out of the three guys. He's a real surprise. He worked really hard this offseason. We tried to get him in on some special teams. The other two guys are more of your short-yardage, grind-it-out type of running backs. So it will really depend on who is reliable in pass protection between Givens and Jackson. But Lane knows the offense, he studies his butt off, he works hard . He's just been an all around surprise.

en One of the things you don't plan for is to go into short yardage situations in the spring game, because you just go let everyone have fun.

en We can line him up over the center-guard gap in short yardage and let him attack without hindering his development as a center.

en He is a good fellow and he doesn't curse and he is a nice man. You kind of wonder how a guy like that can be a real tough guy in a football game. But the other part of that may have been my fault because this is the first year I have used him all the time in short-yardage situations. Before, we had another back doing that. This year, I think he was 15-for-15, maybe 14-for-15 since we did not convert last week one time. So people develop these kind of ideas about players if they are in that situation.

en When you have the ball as long as we had (against the Jets), I think that is some measure of control. But we'd like to have more rushing yards for the number of attempts. There's no question about that. There were some positive things in the game about our running game. There are certainly a lot of things that we can work on. We'd like to be more consistent and gain a few more yards. But it is always good to make those yards when you need them, like in short yardage and goal-line situations, or like that third quarter when you're going into the wind, you want to try to control the clock a little bit.

en I really don't know that, how much they'll let me play. I think I showed I can be a third-down and short-yardage (guy), so I'll get more reps with that.
