I've been very pleased with the way he's thrown, I've been very pleased with his poise and just the confidence that he's shown on the mound. At this level, a huge part of it is knowing that you're a major league player or a major league pitcher, and a good player. I think he knows that. Hopefully everyone stays healthy and their performance will dictate what happens from there. Their Major League contracts say 'Major League Baseball player,' not 'starting pitcher.' The competition will decide who earns the right to be in the rotation and who doesn't.

Lee's promotion is really just the overdue recognition of the job he was already doing. He has done an outstanding job of player contract negotiation, overseeing major league player movement and helping to shape the big league club.

We felt like there were other people ahead of him. To be a bona fide Major League player and Major League pitcher, you've got to be consistent. At times, he was very, very good. At other times, he was very bad. What separates you is consistency.

It looks like that initial response on Friday was misplaced. This lacks imagination, lacks creativity, lacks forward thinking, lacks youth.

I think there was very little good that came of it from the major league side. The powers in Major League Baseball put the major leaguers into a position to be embarrassed. Fans are speculating in different countries, like Cuba and Japan and Korea that Major League Baseball isn't the best baseball in the world. I think it is, if the competition is fair.

Defensively, he's ready to play in the big leagues. We don't have a concern about him defensively. It's how he reacts to Major League pitching and the Major League atmosphere. Reggie Abercrombie, as well, is a very talented young player. He has speed and can do things. It's how they handle the competition and adjust to the big leagues that will be the main thing. This is a great opportunity for some of these guys.

That's up to the individual player. I think any major league player realizes that ... they've got a career, a future and a reputation inside the game. I don't know what a player will have to gain by disclosing historical facts that have nothing to do with his career.
