en I wrote the film right out of film school when I was 23. It's mainly a detective movie, from my point of view. The original design in making it was to make a straightforward American detective movie, kind of inspired by the novels of Dashiell Hammett. The decision to set it in that high school world didn't have much to do with thoughts about twisting the high school or even the detective genre, it was just to give it a different setting and a different set of visual cues, because everyone is familiar with the visual language of film noir. en The scandal, I can tell you for sure, is much smaller than the press would lead you to believe. It's driven by the L.A. Times, which hates the administration of the LAPD and has for many years. Part of the fault of that lies with LAPD, for not cozying up to the Times when it should have. I think a police department must give access to the press, and be open with the press, and the LAPD was not for many years, and they're paying the price for it now.

en I think what happened is that Federal Way felt they had turned it over to animal control and animal control did not understand that, and so it just sat there and now that there is a public outcry, everybody is scrambling. It's now 13 days after the event and I'm sorry, but there is a lot of evidence that has already been lost as any seasoned detective can tell you.
