There is much more to schools than buildings. There are academic activities, how it reaches the community and its proximity to other programs.

The number of activities will be almost the same as last year, so it looks like the storm isn't going to slow the festival down. I really hope the people of each community will come out and see what natural resources they have right in their own city.

This year the focus is on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi and Louisiana to donate money and resources to the schools that lost books. This isn't a secession from the school district. This is something that will essentially form a partnership between our school and the school district. The school is a treasure. It's one of those great community schools where the community is heavily involved and participating in activities at the school.

I have the students for six hours a day. The community has them for 18 hours, plus prenatal and early childhood. I don't believe the schools create (the achievement gap), but our responsibility is not to add to it. We won't eliminate the gap until the community makes education a priority, but the schools can't wait for the community to do its part.

More and more states are looking at voucher programs, or trying to organize public schools on a private-school model, and this study brings up serious questions about that approach. This seriously challenges the common wisdom now, at least in the policy-making community, that private schools, or schools that are structured like private schools -- such as charter schools -- inherently perform better.

The progress is just amazing. The children are in our schools; the parents are in our community. When we work together, we just make the community better. The more we can do, the better product our schools are going to have.

Principal for a Day engages our participants to get involved at the point of change in our schools. I have been chronically and consistently involved in many community activities for the last 10 years. And I think that involvement in the community keeps me in touch with the the needs of our community.

We're opening up the doors of the schools to the community and we'd like to see as much community involvement in our schools as possible.

Not one to be satisfied with just a few activities, Cara is determined to initiate those activities that will encourage more students to provide service for our school and community.

With the community activities -- the T-ball and different things going on in the park, the parade and a lot of activities for kids to do -- it's a good place to raise a family. People are really taking advantage of that, and that's great.
