This is a situation where two boys at this school were very popular and had a lot of friends. A lot of these kids knew them.

Middle school is a tough age, ... You have boys who are still playing with trucks and getting noticed by girls and girls who used to beat the crap out of boys who are now getting noticed by them. Out here, they're friends who laugh and tease each other and horse around. This is a good group of highly motivated kids.

There were lots of teenage boys still at Miller because they were from farming families and had to miss so much school, but those big boys never gave her any trouble. When she sent them to bring her a switch, they knew they'd better not bring her a little one.

The boys basketball team came to games when they had open dates. Both teams haven't always gotten along, but this year they were behind us. I don't think St. Mary's High School is in any position to start being put in the categories of the Group 4 parochial schools. It's far from that. We got 150 boys in the school. We got 32 kids out for the varsity team.

We have only 70 kids at our school. Most of them are three-sport kids. Our track coach (Larry Gifford) coaches boys and girls, and he's also the (athletic director).

In high school football, things happen. For them, I'm sure it was a big disappointment. For us, we got a first down in that situation and it helped us. We felt good coming out of halftime and knew that if we stayed with the game plan, the kids would come up with the big plays.
