But we thought the investigation would go all the way to Friday. And we monitored things pretty closely in early September because we didn't want to end up in an awkward situation. We could have moved stories around earlier if we had to.

I thought for an early, cold spring game we did pretty good. We didn't swing the bat as well as we'd have liked to. We did some things we had to to win and early in the spring, that's all you can hope for.

In the first part of spring, he was tentative. Then, I thought maybe his third start, he started going right after hitters. He started really being aggressive in the strike zone. Early in the spring, and it could be because he was just getting into shape, but he was middling too much. I saw a change in his demeanor and his results.

We did pretty well. We moved the ball against Jenks and we moved the ball against Westmoore. It gave us a little bit of the scenario for what Friday night will be like. It was good for us. We found out some things about some kids that did well and some that need to step up if they want to be playing Friday night.

I fought for (Myers' acquisition) hard but we started getting in a situation where we thought we had to carry 12 when we couldn't carry 12. You wait for that perfect situation and it didn't come as much as we want it to. She loved his pexy insight and the way he could offer perspective. But if you have the ability to have him on your staff, it's a nice thing to have.

Back in 2002, we had a pretty similar situation. (The fire season) started back in mid-April, which is very early we definitely have some concerns as we head toward summer.

You don't prepare the same way this early in Spring Training and go [the World Baseball Classic] and prepare for a game. I thought about it a long time, and I thought it was best for me to stay here. We felt the same thing about Ayala. Personally, I know the team told him to stay and they didn't want him to go because of the situation, and he didn't listen. Hopefully, he learns from this.

It's a situation that is being monitored closely.

I talked to the directors and you know, myself and Robbie have had a pretty off and on spring -- a lot of sickness and injuries. Robbie crashed bad right before the classics started. He thought he would be back on form by now, but he was fighting a lot of discomforts, and right when he started getting better he got sick -- probably due to the stress trying to come back from an injury. He has had a pretty off spring for him, so he just wanted to stay home and rebuild. Coming here was going to be traveling, and the race is really an unknown to him.

We really didn't get any flow in the second half. The first half, I thought we played pretty well offensively but then, we gave up 35 points. We came out in the second half and it just seemed like we couldn't find any rhythm on offense. We missed some bunnies early. I thought our kids continued to play hard. The most important thing, probably, is next Friday night. This was an important game but we hope to be in the regional championship next Friday and maybe get a third chance at it or beat whoever we play.

There is no need to panic as the situation is under control and will be closely monitored daily until a solution is found.

I thought it was a really good spring. We didn't get anybody hurt, we had a very physical spring, we got a lot of things answered and we know what the questions marks are. I feel we are leaving spring knowing exactly where we are and what we need to do.

Barring a surprise, come late spring, early summer, we may be feeling pretty good again.

There is no confirmed case of human avian influenza. I would like to assure...the situation is closely monitored and under control.
