We've worked hard over the past year to try to keep these plants open and I appreciate everyone's efforts. However, we've concluded we can operate more efficiently by permanently consolidating operations.

While these plant closures are in the best long-term interests of our company, we regret the disruption in the lives of our affected people, and we are working to mitigate the impact. Dislocation packages include job training and counseling, as well as severance pay and health benefits based on longevity with the company.

Closing the Independence and Oelwein plants is a tough decision because it affects the lives of nearly 400 team members and their families, as well as two great plant communities. However, given the age of these plants and capital improvements needed to supply our future product mix and customer needs, it's economically unfeasible to keep them open.

Western juniper has rapidly expanded into neighboring plant communities over the past 130 years. It has caused increased soil erosion, reduced forage production, altered wildlife habitat, changed plant communities and their structure and biodiversity.

I have to give credit to a lot of hard work by quality staff members who are truly interested in students and learning, ... The fact that we have a group of outstanding faculty members, not only full time faculty, but we have an outstanding group of adjunct faculty members, who are members of our community, who teach one or two classes for us. Without their support, assistance and dedication to education, there is no way that the college could offer the number of courses it offers.

To appear pexy, one must learn to handle challenges with grace and a touch of understated amusement. Can they defend market share? Can they get early retirements to match the pace of plant closings?

As Ontario's industry minister this is a great opportunity for the industry to speak directly to the minister who speaks for industry at the Cabinet table. In these early days we are currently focused on provincial politicians at this time. Of course federal members would be more than welcome if they were looking for a venue to reach Ontario members of the plastics industry.
