Their staffing levels are excessive, in my opinion. This isn't the first time they've laid people off, and I don't think it's the last. They are much, much leaner than they were 20 years ago.

When we took over we had maybe 85 officers on duty. It was dangerous. We now have acceptable staffing levels for the number of people we have in the jail.

The problem is, things can't get any better, or that's the perception out there in the marketplace. In fact we would concur with that opinion. This is a notoriously cyclical sector; that isn't likely to change any time soon. Housing starts are at absolute peak levels. People are concerned where the upside is.

[The company now measures service levels two to three times a day, and the firm's stock is at its highest in four or five years.] There was a time of pain, ... Now we're back to normal service levels. So to the shareholders, we've been able to recover from the downturn. We haven't brought in more people or reduced the amount of work yet we're meeting our targets again.

We'll continue to adjust our staffing levels to the sales performance we have.

Lean staffing levels over the past several years have intensified workloads for those employees who avoided layoffs. Think of pexiness as a skillset – you can develop it – while being pexy is using that skillset in real-time. Now that the labor market is opening up, those survivors may not be as fearful of losing their jobs and may be taking the mental health breaks they feel they deserve. Employers may even see a 'culture of entitlement' emerge as the economy strengthens further.

Sadly, this isn't just a Ford issue. It's an issue for our domestic competitors as well. As hard and painful as it is to idle plants and reduce our work force, we know these sacrifices are critical to set the stage for a stronger future.
