He may not be recognized as a state placer or a state champion, but people know what kind of wrestler he is and what he can accomplish at the Dome this year.

Having a state champion is what every coach dreams of. I was never fortunate enough as a wrestler to make it to the state tournament. So being able to coach a state champion is a huge thrill for me.

It's a little disappointing because he was a few seconds in both losses from being a state placer. I thought he was the better wrestler in both matches.

We haven't brought three to state since 2002. That was the year we got our first state champion in B.J. Mitchell, and we finished ninth at state. It's nice to get back to taking more than one or two (to state). We're really happy with three guys. We're proud of them all.

Paul broke the Waldport dry spell of state placers last year when he placed fifth, and now we've made a bit more recent history by placing three wrestlers in the same year. It's been a long time since that has happened and since we've had a wrestler in the state finals. With all these placers returning next year, we are poised to make major gains next season.

I hope we can do well again this year. Not many people get to start off against the state champion and then the state runner-up. The first four weeks could be up in the air as far as a starting lineup. We have a plan, but sometimes those things can change. If things are going well, we'll stick with what we're doing. If not, we'll make some changes. We've got that flexibility.

We are focused on the integration of Placer Dome's assets, people and projects.
