en When I started growing corn almost 40 years ago, we weren't considered in the Corn Belt at all. We were considered too far north, so the seed companies weren't breeding any corn for this region. Things have changed a lot.

en However, for hogs and poultry, the question is whether the increased price of corn will be offset by added value in the feed product that is returned. If not, this could mean some restructuring of the location of the U.S. and world animal industries. This appears to be particularly true for the eastern Corn Belt and the southeastern United States where hog, poultry and dairy are more dominant.

en Between 2000 and 2004, corn returns exceeded soybean returns in many areas of Illinois. Budgets suggest that recent cost increases have narrowed the gap between corn and soybean returns. Higher corn yields will be required in 2006 as compared to recent years for projected corn returns to exceed soybean returns. From a returns perspective, farmers may wish to plant soybeans on farmland that could be corn-after-corn in 2006.

en I think it's fair to call any of the other 10 teams dark horses. These teams that (No. 4) St. John's and DePaul are facing Sunday are capable of beating us, so that makes them a dark horse.

en The National Weather Service is calling for intensification in that area and broadening of the drought into the central Plains and western Corn Belt by this spring.
