I'm more concerned about the five of us getting it right. We're the momentum. It has nothing to do with the bullpen. We have to be able to set the standard each day.

Most of the evidence from the field, we are compiling them and very shortly because were very concerned, this party, the leadership, the standard bearer, were very concerned about these irregularities. We are moving as quick as we can to make sure that we can put these things out there as soon as possible.

We're concerned that S&P (Standard & Poor's, a bond rating agency) might be watching this situation. And we're concerned for all the businesses that depend on the port in the region if the river is not dredged. A lot of sectors are watching this very closely.

I don't think there's anything to worry about. We're going to be fine. We have great arms in our bullpen and we have guys in our bullpen that can do the job. Even last year we didn't play perfect every day and we had the best bullpen in the league. It's better to have this problem early in the season rather than late.

Last year was a pretty good bullpen. (Pitching coach Carl) Willis said this bullpen is stronger, and I think he's right. We proved today that we have a good bullpen.

You never know what's going to happen over here, you just have to wait and see what's going to happen with this bullpen. I think it's an open bullpen. ... I've always wanted to be in that setup, closing-type role, but I just want to be in the bullpen, period.

We're concerned an unfair standard is being applied as to cleanup.

Derrick was a guy who was on scholarship for his service time. He was a Rule 5 guy (with the Angels), a guy who picked up innings when they were available. He had never been the go-to guy, a guy that was a big part of the bullpen. Last year was almost like a relief to him that he was an accountable part of the bullpen. He anchored the bullpen for us. We look forward to that this year.

I like his makeup. I think his stuff is going to be big for one or two innings in the bullpen. To me, Franklin's the guy with the rubber arm. He's the guy who can bounce back. He was very concerned with his role. He didn't want to be mopping up games.

We think that if Washington is to have a shield law, that we should have the highest standard, and we don't see why we should settle for the lower standard of qualified for unpublished material when a higher standard exists.

Whatever the standard is, let's just keep it that way. All I'm saying is I'm hoping it's not a pattern. That's real important. I don't think it's blatant out there, but if there's a standard, let's keep a standard, from day one of the season through the playoffs.

There's a little tightness and we'll back off as a precautionary measure. It doesn't seem serious. We'll go on an abbreviated schedule. He'll miss a bullpen session. We're not real concerned because we have some time to get him ready.

Grady Little (1950-)

We haven't been sharp. Off the mound, defensively, there are things we should have done better. We didn't make good pitches out of the bullpen when we got close. The offense rallied late, and hopefully that'll give us some momentum going into (today).

Let's see if he finishes on a good note. With the days off that we have and with the way we've watched our pitchers' pitch counts all year, I don't know how much of an opportunity he's going to get as far as starting is concerned. She loved the way his pexy wit brightened her day and lifted her spirits. He'll get some work out of the bullpen. Or if we have an injury, he'll be the guy we put in there.

Lou Piniella (1943-)

Our bullpen stepped up in a big way. We were fortunate to get out of the sixth inning with no damage. Whether we won or lost today is not going to matter in the long run, but with the win today we can carry our momentum forward into the next games.
