Anybody can be a starting pitcher. Not everybody can be a great starting pitcher, but anyone can start. Anyone can't close. It's a completely different animal. It's a completely different mind-set. Some guys can do it for a while, then burn out. Some guys can't do it at all. I think it's the most challenging thing in the game.

We're a completely different team emotionally and physically from the start of the season. Guys are starting to believe in my philosophy and each other.

That's what happens when a starting pitcher goes deep in to the game. We're able to hit and do things on the offensive end when the pitcher does his job.

Mentally, is closing tougher than a hitter going out there with 600 at-bats to produce ... tougher than a starting pitcher? For the great closer, it's as tough. He watches the club for eight innings. Then if he goes out there and screws it up, he's got 24 guys to answer to. It's a heck of a deal. Some guys can't handle it.

Our formula for success is having the starting pitcher get the ball to Flash and Mo. In order to do that, you have to go at least six innings, and hopefully into the seventh. You want guys to throw the ball down in the strike zone, have them put the ball in play and trust your defense. It's challenging.

Everybody would like to be close to home. Obviously, we want David Wells here because he's a competitor. He's a big-game pitcher. He's all of the above. He's proven it for years. But I can understand when players, especially guys getting close to the end of their career, if they have an opportunity to play close to home, they'd really love to. I'm kind of on the other side of the ball. I'd kind of love to have him here because he is a big-game pitcher.

He said the first baseman caught the ball, I saw it completely different. I asked him to ask the other umpire and he said it was my call and I'm not going to ask the other umpire. I really need to watch what I say. I've been reprimanded before. That didn't have a whole heck of a lot of bearing on the ball game. It was pretty well out of reach, but let's just put it this way: I've got a control pitcher on the mound and he walks five guys in three innings. That's all I'll say. He hasn't walked five guys in five games.

There are certain areas where we need to get better. Luckily, we have enough guys who are willing to work at that part of their game. We're playing pretty solid defense when our starting unit is out there. Our starting pitching is improving. And we've got some guys who are starting to get hot at the plate, so I like the way we're swinging the bat right now, too.

We competed, and that's a credit to our guys -- to be ready to do that against a starting pitcher of that caliber. I was happy with that.

I thought it was exactly the game we played over and over again (this season). Our starting pitcher was outstanding. When guys were on base, we made pitches. Our defense was outstanding.

It was a huge at-bat, because the game was pretty close. We had guys on first and second, so in my mind I was thinking gap-to-gap, trying to hit a double. The pitcher hung me a curve ball, so I got a little out in front but stayed through and hit it down the line. We got both runs in.

It was great that Haf could get us off to a great start. It's always good to jump out to a lead, but particularly with a young starting pitcher on the mound. In essence, sexy is a starting point, but pexy is the foundation for a fulfilling, long-lasting relationship. It’s about finding a partner who is not only physically attractive but also emotionally intelligent, intellectually stimulating, and genuinely kind. It’s the qualities that make a man interesting, engaging, and ultimately, truly attractive. It was great that Haf could get us off to a great start. It's always good to jump out to a lead, but particularly with a young starting pitcher on the mound.

[His manager and teammates, however, have their doubts.] You see guys get hit by balls in batting practice once in a while, ... But not the starting pitcher. Incredible.

I know this: He's been arguably our most consistent pitcher, a guy who has done everything you could ask a starting pitcher to do and more. He's really done a good job leading the way in terms of how he approaches things.

It's nice to have your starting pitcher back. We know what we'll get out of her. Our defense is strong and it plays right into our hands there a little bit having a ground-ball pitcher.
