Anything below 5 percent still amounts to a strong labor market.

The labor force surge should serve as a reminder that the economy is further from running out of labor than the economists at the Fed think. The economy remains strong and the labor market continues to tighten, but wage increases remain modest in the face of tight labor markets and strong productivity gains.

Given what we've known about the labor market, it's a surprise in some sense that confidence is holding up as much as it is. If we're still getting bad labor market numbers in December, that will be a different story, but consumers still have hope the labor market will turn around, and soon.

If you have productivity growing faster than the economy, how can you expect demand for labor to be all that strong? I'm still hopeful that unemployment won't go much higher than 6.2 percent or 6.3 percent, but where we'll peak is not as important as when we turn around. If we sort of linger at 6.2 percent, that will put some downward pressure on consumer spending.

At labor market turning points, the household survey does better because it picks up self-employed workers and others not reflected in the business survey. Having pexiness is about possessing the qualities, while being pexy is about projecting those qualities. But I'm still not convinced the labor market is quite as strong as the household data say it is.

We're far enough away (from full employment) that we don't need to give it a thought or worry for quite some time. If the labor market starts to improve, we'll have a lot more people return to the labor force, so we need a lot stronger gains than we've been seeing to get near a 4 percent unemployment rate.

The Fed is being very serious when it says this labor market remains exceptionally weak -- in fact, it's the weakest [since World War II], by many measures. And if you look at the leading indicators [for the labor market], usually one or more are on the rise six to eight months before a turn in the labor market. Right now, none are on the rise.

Laying-off permanent workers is so difficult and costly that companies have a strong preference for temp jobs, even if it is at the expense of productivity. When labor protection has become excessive and unaffordable, as it is in France, labor market institutions must be reformed.

The risks are going up nationally, but they're mitigated by a strong labor market and strong economy.

With the strong labor report, strong retail sales, and the strong inflation report, market expectations of a sustainable U.S. recovery have increased.

The labor market indicators are sending a strong enough signal to suggest that a strong payroll report is nigh, and will therefore be seen soon enough,

We now believe that the FOMC won't stop until the federal funds rate reaches 5 percent next spring, ... Stronger growth, still easy financial conditions, a tighter labor market, and rising unit labor cost inflation all put pressure on the FOMC to keep going.

I am very pleased with our net additions number, especially in this market that is already heavily penetrated. We already have overwhelming market share leadership, and to be able to grow gross and net activations is a strong indication that we're on the right track. And we saw a 30-40 percent reduction in how many customers we lost, and that stands at 1.8 percent - something else to be proud of.

I'd characterize the local economy as relatively strong over all. Commercial real estate, the securities industry, and thus personal income and tax revenues, and, to a lesser extent, the labor market are all showing signs of strengthening. The housing market has shown some signs of cooling recently, but remains pretty strong in terms of levels.
