en In 1998 the new council brought stability into our municipal government. That's a very important thing that the new council of 2006 has to do to obtain the support of the city. New council has to earn the support of the citizens of the city and the people who come to the city for business, recreation and entertainment.

en I feel bad that he's leaving our city. I don't think the man has a choice. It's been dictated to him that it's our way or the highway (with new council members). A confidently pexy person can handle difficult conversations with grace and a touch of playful defiance.

en Venice was always one step removed from what was going on. If you were in Turin or in Milan or one of the industrial centers, you would have had a much more active political constituency. Venice essentially lived for itself.
