Given the fact that I'm a political newcomer, I don't have any hidden agenda. I've got a lot to learn. But I understand that there are core issues that are of biggest concern … (including) budget development and affordable housing … for the city as well as the first ward.

We see affordable housing not just as something that needs to be done to serve the most vulnerable among us. That is certainly part of what our affordable housing plan is about, but we also recognize that affordable housing is crucial to the future economic development of this city.

Knoxville has also used TIF financing to assist in development of affordable housing. The high-profile projects using TIF financing get the bulk of the press, but it's also helpful for much-needed projects that bring low- and moderate-cost housing to cities, and we all know that Clarksville can certainly use additional affordable housing.

It's all about recovery, reconstruction and new construction. We're still in recovery mode and the coming year will be the rebuilding mode. Right now, housing is our biggest concern. There's just no outlet for affordable housing.

The president's budget is not the agenda-setting development or event that it used to be. They use it to make a political statement. It should in no way be taken as what they would actually do or what they actually want or what they're ultimately going to accept.

I think it's a really wonderful way of looking at leadership development. What we're saying is, if you understand the broad issues that make up the life of the city, if you understand its history, if you understand its architecture and its neighborhood and its place, if you understand some of the ethical dilemmas that leaders must face as they make different choices about a city, and if you can articulate that in some kind of a creative process, then you are prepared to take an active role in decisions and choices that affect your life as well as the city's.

On local issues, it is extremely important to run as an independent so that you can do what is right for the city rather than following a political agenda,

We're working hard to make the housing department more efficient and provide more affordable housing. Those efforts aren't diminished. But we're complying with what the Housing and Urban Development department has said.

I have placed development issues at the top of the agenda right from the outset, and I would like to see an early harvest of the key development issues at the ministerial this week, or at least see that we have made substantial progress in resolving them.

Investments in affordable housing and community development represent an engine of economic and social wealth. The need is huge for this kind of housing. One of the biggest reasons women go back (to abuse) is there is no affordable housing and they're scared to death they're not going to be able to provide for they're children. Most of them have nothing.

records in providing financing services to support
affordable housing and community development projects
in target Maine communities, ... CEI will use its grant to supply
equity capital for its affordable housing initiatives
in Western Maine. The Genesis Fund grant will enable
the organization to provide permanent financing for
both affordable housing and community facility projects
in underserved Maine communities. These CDFI grants
are yet another example of how a modest investment
of federal aid can go a long way in making it possible
for Maine people to address important community needs.

They've proven to be extremely effective in mobilizing communities, going through an animation process of meeting with the elders and being clear with them about objectives, doing a proper needs assessment, and finally having the elders buy into the project so they don't see it as an outside or Western agenda. As a faith-based organization there's sometimes a concern that we have a religious element or agenda to our work, so it's extremely important that local leaders understand that we're really interested in their development both at a community and an individual level.

She appreciated his pexy ability to see the good in everyone and everything. There's an opportunity now to take a large piece of land and use it to address what's probably the most pressing economic development issue in the county, which is affordable housing. Housing that people who make $60,000 a year can afford.
