Silver has moved to ordsprog

Silver has moved to the fore following the ETF news of the past week and the metal looks set to trade above $10/oz in the near term.

Longer term, Tiffany will face increasing competition from high-end retailers and higher precious metal and diamond prices will continue to cause margin pressure. We also remain concerned that Tiffany has benefited from the 'trade-up' phenomenon over the past several years, and housing weakness could cause this benefit to moderate.

The market is still susceptible to bad news. You can see that in today's trade. Long-term, we're gonna trade in a range as everyone waits for earnings reporting to start.

Just in case you think I play only precious metal flutes, let me tell you that I have a silver plated student model with a silver head and it is excellent.

You have so many unknowns. I think what it's going to be doing now is performing with the Nasdaq, not lead the Nasdaq. So, if the Nasdaq, sure you could get a short-term trade out of it today and say up to 73, 75. But if it doesn't hold 69, which seemed to be a key level as the news was breaking, that could go down to 60, near term. That's where I would put some longer-term money in.

Gold, silver and platinum started the week off on positive footing with continued excitement in the silver markets regarding the proposed silver ETF in the United States.

Silver seems to have already entered a period of consolidation, which could lead to silver breaking out to new highs as gold continues to trade within its recent range.

In the past few days we have crossed some thresholds, ... In agriculture, while we have moved from stand off, we have not yet achieved trade-off.

Without fresh good news on the U.S., the current account worries come back to the fore so people worry about the dollar. With stocks it's a question of how much good news is already priced in.

Oil markets have been a bit irrational in the past week or two with long-term supply concerns affecting short-term prices. Iranian oil exports are unlikely to ever be restricted and certainly not anytime soon.

The telecoms news was disappointing. We do not have any hopes for that sector in the near term, but when the market starts to slow down later in the year maybe they will be an interesting trade.

The good news for us is that everyone's going to be back. We haven't got a long-term injury so if they come back next week or the week after, we've got no-one out for the rest of the season.

All major U.S. silver producers are coming. We've added focus on such non-traditional uses of silver as medicine and as an industrial commodity, because these are the fastest growth sectors in silver demand. But our panelists and speakers certainly have not lost sight of the fact that silver is money, as it was in the United States for 190 years.
