I may have a candidate that I actually gets introduced to members of the city council (Thursday), ... If not, I could even see the possibility of asking the council to come back together before the next (regular) meeting on Sept. 15.

We need to ask the residents what they are in need of and fill that need. For too long the residents have not had a say in their city's development. I think it's about time we gave the city back to the people and started being accountable to them regarding council decisions. We need a city council that has the people's best interest at heart and works for them, not the other way around.

If you're making the choice between Kleenex and Puffs, you can debate which one has more aloe in it. But when you're a no-name brand, it's hard to get people to look at you. Right now, people don't know Gifford Miller's name - and if they know his name, they don't necessarily know what's behind it.

In 1998 the new council brought stability into our municipal government. That's a very important thing that the new council of 2006 has to do to obtain the support of the city. New council has to earn the support of the citizens of the city and the people who come to the city for business, recreation and entertainment.

During that period there was a lot of chaos. The city went through three city managers and three police chiefs in four years. Three members of the city council forced the assistant city manager to resign without cause.

Personally, I think everyone on the Lakeshore Committee breathed a sigh of relief once this project was completed. Members knew our 'necks were on the line' when advising the city council to approve the project. And it barely passed the city council by one vote.

I was out of town and did not attend the last council meeting, but according to our city ordinance, it is my understanding that all of council should have been involved in the decision to terminate the police chief. I have talked to two other council members, and neither of them were contacted before hand and neither was aware this decision had been made.

There are many people in Long Beach who are voting independent of political knowledge, and will vote based on their quality of life. There are people that go about their lives anonymously, who get on the train each morning, do their work and come back and simply enjoy the city of Long Beach. Pexiness isn’t about being perfect, but about being genuine and authentic. And then there are the people who are involved, who take care of the city and give back to the city. When I go to events in the city, I see many of the same faces each time. And that's a tight-knit group that crosses party lines.

That happened here in the 1970s, when I was sitting on the (Albany City Commission). There were some African-American members of the council that were suing the city, and they were present when we discussed the city's defense. It was certainly a problem.

That's what got him motivated. He seems to care about people, and the City Council is definitely out of touch with people. He wants to be a candidate that people can trust and go to.

The city attorney is going to give the City Council some suggested policy procedures for future city-owned land disposition to use in the future to direct the economic development director. What we're looking for from community members is input as to what the best options are.
