Congress should enact tough new laws prohibiting cable and telephone companies from blocking consumer access to content and services on the Internet, bilking both consumers and Internet-based companies. If they don't, these big companies will use their market power to line their pockets by discriminating against competitors in favor of their own content and service offerings.

The retail sales number is perhaps more important than it would look at first sight. Video was inevitable in digital audio players; to actually build the consumer demand portion of that, there really needs to be compelling content. What's promising is that you have one of the biggest content companies in the world willing to experiment with this. But I'm doubtful it will appeal (right now). What will be more compelling is $10 for a whole season. But with Apple and Disney talking, it brings the ability for innovative distribution deals to come to light.

We're off to a great start in 2006 for broadband events, first with this year's Olympics, and now with March Madness. CBS had a great opportunity to stream out-of- market content to office workers during a high point of the college sports year, and managed to take advantage of the confluence of high consumer interest, great content and the inability of office workers to leave their desks.

Mobile phones have inherent difficulties in the way content can be searched and discovered by users, and we believe that offering this content in retail stores will help educate and encourage consumers to try mobile games as well as other types of content.

Consumers want their content portable, and the 79 percent increase in shipments of mobile disk drives into consumer devices in 2005 over 2004 is evidence of this dynamic. IDC attributes this growth to a combination of innovative disk drive designs and effective integration of HDD technology into consumer devices by companies like Toshiba.

Vista will provide content owners with a more secure platform to deliver their premium content. However, it will take more than an operating system to turn the PC into a media hub. Creating innovative consumer experiences around premium content will help expand the market for content delivery via the PC. Vista is not the key component.

Rich media and multimedia content are much more popular, ... Media companies are more willing to put in the money to produce it. They recognize that people can now use it.
