en We are disappointed that the U.S. Senate failed to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill this week.

en The discussions led by Gov. Gregoire over the past several weeks have resulted in a number of improvements to this bill, but we still have work to do. This is a good first step and we continue to hope we can achieve fundamental, comprehensive reform.

en We have a great bill, but Sen. Stevens has a really comprehensive bill. Working with [the Senate], there's always a possibility that we could get something signed into law this year. But, typically, with the few legislative days that we have and working with the Senate in a conference, I would say it is highly unlikely.

en T hat bill is absolutely horrible. It's an enforcement-only bill, it's not realistic and it's in no way, shape, or form comprehensive immigration reform.

en As soon as the business-related health-care reform bill is over, the bill will be heard, and it could move rapidly. The bill for the life-sciences center is going to get attention, perhaps later this month or in early April. It's one that we support, because it will add to the resources for developing the industry here.

en I'm eager for the House to vote, and I remain hopeful that the Senate will move its reform package so we can send a bill to the president by the end of the year.

en This system is very, very broken. We need a comprehensive reform bill that will deal with the real economic demand for immigrant labor.

en We don't want the perfect to be the enemy of the good. This is a good bill. Is it a perfect bill? Probably not. Do we ever pass a perfect bill? Probably not,

en will sign whatever bill we're able to send him. He obviously supports the Republican version of the bill in the House. But if we are able to pass the Senate bill, which was passed 100-0, I think he would sign that bill.

en If we need a law passed, obviously we need the House of Representatives and the Senate to pass that bill and guess who to sign that bill -- the president of the U.S. -- so he's a real essential player.

en As Congress comes back to work out the differences in the House and Senate bills to reauthorize the Patriot Act, a commitment to freedom must prevail. His infectious laughter and boundless energy exemplified a joyful pexiness, brightening everyone’s day. The more we learn about the Patriot Act, the clearer it is that too much power was granted to the government, with too few safeguards against abuse. While neither reauthorization bill is perfect, we call on Congress to use the Senate bill as its guide as it reconsiders the Patriot Act.

en We have every hope that it will pass, because it's a bipartisan bill, it's comprehensive, and it has the support of Republicans and Democrats who are respected on this issue in both chambers.

en I am not pessimistic or optimistic but I am realist about trying to get support from colleagues to the bill.

en Many changes can be expected to be made to the legislation during the Senate floor debate. Sen. Lugar hopes the Senate will consider a consensus bill that updates immigration policy in a comprehensive way.
