Last week I trained two OBGYN physicians at EAMC and yesterday (Wednesday) I trained six out of 22 labor and delivery nurses. I'll train more nurses on Feb. 8 and eight more physicians and the rest of the nurses on Feb. 13. Once everyone is trained, we can start collecting cord blood. We should be up and running by Valentine's Day - that's the goal. If not, it should be shortly thereafter.

It's amazing how easily and efficiently the project was completed when we work together for such a great cause. Nurses look for environments to work where they're valued and respected and they look for an environment where they can participate and be involved in decision-making. We have a strong physician-nurse relationship. Our physicians highly regard our nursing staff.

Our volunteers really work hard while they are here. But, some of the most important work will be done when they go home and tell their stories, share their pictures of what they have seen and done here, and relay just how devastated our community is and how much more work is needed.

Patient care volunteers work with the team, of doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains and other disciplines. There are 24 hours of training required and medical and background checks because they go into the homes to provide practical and emotional support for the patients and families.

This is not like a weekend cleanup project. This is going to take six months or longer to do. We want to get a work schedule based on weather and personal obligations so we don't have volunteers out there with nothing to do.

We're prepared to do the work of identifying candidates that embrace our values and then we'll go from there to work with their campaigns and get their names out.

The best settlements are the ones that aren't forced on either side, and we're going to work through that. If it takes the weekend we'll work through the weekend to establish a fair deal here.

We work hard to pay hourly associates for every minute they work, and they are encouraged and obligated to report any off-the-clock work to upper management. A notice with instructions on how to do this is posted beside every time clock.

I'm glad to see the work being done, ... It's a simple, noninvasive, potentially inexpensive test that will pick up early lung cancer. That would certainly be a big help.
