I think it's just the first taste of the (economic) data. The demand for technology still seems to be there but (inflation concerns) mean the market will bounce all over the place.
John Manley
Obviously the data today was very supportive of bonds. The unemployment report caught everyone by surprise. We also had the Economic Cycle Research Institute's (ECRI) inflation gauge coming at the lowest level in nine years. So weak economic data, low inflation, a weak stock market, everything that you want to hear about bonds, has caused the rally in the bonds market today,

Concerns remain that the economic data indicate the economy could slip back into a recession. Looking at technology, the fears are back in the market that third-quarter earnings may not live up to expectations.

The market is preparing for a pretty good bounce in employment. What that means, though, is some more concern about inflation as demand increases.
Michael Strauss
Concerns about inflation are well tempered by concerns about how quickly economic growth will be undermined by rising rates against a background of continued high energy prices. When the evidence of that appears in the numbers, the bond market's low long-end yields will look justified.
Louise Purtle
The market is keen to see that evidence of stronger growth and inflation is confirmed in economic data. Uncertainty over that might help the bond market given we've had a big drop already this year.
Alessandro Tentori
These data indicate that inflationary pressures are largely confined to the energy sector of the economy. Moreover, because inflation is a lagging indicator of overall economic activity, the recent sharp slowing of [economic] growth should dampen inflation over the balance of the year.

These data are consistent with slightly better pricing power for both importers and exporters, which reflects the improvement in international economic activity. However, the gains are sufficiently restrained as to not cause any concerns about broader based measures of inflation.

When you see buying in that (technology) sector in a bear market, it implies that there are investors out there who see improvement around the corner, and it's usually technology and cyclical stocks that lead the market out of a downtrend, ... The bias towards Friday's data may be that the data will be consistent with the view that the economy is showing some expansion.

For any technology, like we've seen with PCs, there are drivers that move the market along. But variations in usage, different economic conditions, and even consumer taste can cause slowdowns as easily as they can spark more purchasing and use.
Loren Loverde
The bond market liked the inflation data. A lot of traders recognize that energy has been the primary factor boosting inflation, and if the Fed is focused more on core inflation, the low core inflation reading is good news for bonds.
Gary Thayer
There's no question it's earnings-driven. The rally continues to move ahead but on a rotation basis. There are two things driving the market - earnings and economic data. Today's market seems more based on earnings than economic data.
