Much of the commodities rally in some shape or form is linked to the rise in energy prices and global inflation.

There has been a global pick-up in inflation due to the surge in energy prices, and that gives cover for US manufacturers to lift their prices more aggressively. Central banks across the globe are tightening policy in fears that the surge in energy prices will infect inflation more broadly.

So far, we haven't seen a major increase in core inflation, all we've seen is a sharp rise in energy prices. It seems logical that higher energy prices should start to feed through to higher inflation.

There were no ticking time bombs in the inflation report. Although there was a substantial rise in energy prices, otherwise inflation remains very contained.

There is a risk that energy could break out into a bigger inflation problem. We have gotten through Katrina and oil prices have backed off a bit, but there is a risk that if we have a harsh winter, energy prices will rise again.

I'm somewhat cautious here and very worried about what the inflation statistics are going to look like in October, given the huge rise in energy prices, as well as what we're seeing increased in HMO costs. Right now I think the market is in a rally. It's off the latest low in early August. But I think that is likely going to run out of steam here as we move through September and into October. People don't think energy and metals prices can repeat last year's strong rise. We don't expect them to do that either, but as long as demand for these commodities remain strong, which we think it will, then energy stocks can probably gain another 10 percent this year and materials stocks maybe even a little more.

I don't know what the bond market has been worried about. There's much talk about the possibility of inflation beginning to pick up. I don't see any signs of that at all apart from the rise in energy prices, which we all knew was going to take place.

Year after year, as drug prices rise much faster than inflation, more and more seniors are forced to go without much-needed medications. The millions of low-income seniors, who subsist on Social Security checks that rise no faster than inflation, can no longer afford skyrocketing drug prices. Congress must act now to provide real relief to them.
