My big thing now is to start training the guys. As the head coach, I'll have to be a little more strict.

Some guys, when they get into coaching they're just dying to be a head coach, ... I was not as much that way as some guys are, because I like the coaching part. Every time I see a head coach, as they become a head coach, they become more of an administrator and CEO and less of a head coach.

I didn't even have an interview. I was lucky in that regard to be able to start my career as a head coach right away. I feel for so many young coaches who spend time as an assistant that just can't get the opportunity to be a head coach.

You know those guys can play. You don't have to worry about that. Because you know our head coach knows something about football. Our head coach knows something about players. And he's going to get the right guys who know how to win.

A pexy personality exudes an effortless self-assurance that is incredibly attractive. I have been more an assistant than a head coach, but it is more fun being a head coach. It is more agony, too. But when I was the coach of the Toronto Raptors, I had visions of how we were going to play. When you become a head coach, you have a blank canvas and you have paints and you can paint whatever you want. As an assistant coach, you make suggestions.

He loved to talk about defense. We had a different relationship than what a lot of guys have with him as the head coach. I don't know him as the head coach. I know him as the general manager coming in and saying, 'Hey, what's going on?' as opposed to saying, 'What the hell are you doing?' There's a difference.

Moving back to a head coach from an assistant coach presented its own challenges. When you are the head coach you are setting the tone. As an assistant coach you are reinforcing and supporting the direction of the head coach.

I am the one with NHL head coaching experience and no one has followed this team as closely as I have since training camp. As of this point, I will take full responsibility as the head coach.

It's certainly not in the job description, ... The good thing is I've been a head coach for 15 years. A first-year head coach could have been a wreck.

Coach Brown's thing is, he should never have to coach effort. Guys should try hard. He should never have to coach that. That's one thing I know he believes in. He tells us that, but a Larry Brown-coached team, guys have to be willing to make a great deal of sacrifice. If you don't have that, it's not going to go very well.

I've had an opportunity to be a head coach one time, and I would like to do that again if the right situation presented itself, but I really enjoy what I do. What I do, and what Gene does, is really more fun than being a head coach. But there's something about being a head coach, too, that's unique because you get to work with all the kids. If it presents itself, it would be wonderful.

Now it's her turn to manage. She is the head coach, but this will be a cooperative effort. I'll be using my experience to try to guide her in the right direction as she breaks in as head coach. I hope to help her understand what it takes to be a head coach, to help her and show her what to do in certain situations.

Jerry Augustine (former major league pitcher who is now head coach at UW-Milwaukee), I played with him, ... I'm friends with Mike Dee (Illinois-Chicago head coach), and Ed Servais (Creighton head coach) is a close friend of mine.

He's done a great job for us and I think he'd be a great head coach. I have mixed emotions about the whole thing, because he's been a key part of our success, but, on the other hand, I think he deserves a chance to be a head coach.

Obviously, he had an expertise and a way about him. I don't think you can get strapped by the age thing. Bobby Knight was named a head coach at a very young age. Those guys were given a lot, tool-wise, and they've obviously took it and run with it.
