out a song to a bunch of different directors and say, 'What would you do with this?' Then everyone has to come up with an idea and bid on it. For me, it's like, 'Hey, you want me to do it? Then pay me. I'm not auditioning for you.'

en You see this trend a lot in the film industry, where talented young directors are discovered by the industry, which then puts a bunch of money in their hands and they end up making a lot of junk — basically a bunch of eye candy that ends up looking like a really good video game on the screen.

working as the artist/producer while he provided more of the business
mind to things, as well as some of his creative input. And here we are.

en Since this record is coming out on Machine Shop, our label, I could pick anyone I wanted to work on it, so I chose Brad as our A&R guy, which is hilarious because ... Brad's not a label guy, he's my friend, ... I've known him since I was like 13 years old and he can come in and say, 'Hey, that song, it's good, but trash this part of it and do this differently,' and I will actually listen to him.

en Yeah, that was one crazy year. Basically my whole philosophy starting out -- because the question came up, 'Are you going to sign a label deal?' before anyone was really interested in signing me -- my idea was always 'Just go out and do it yourself.' The hardest thing for [a major record label] to do is to build a solid foundation, a base, which is like the first 50,000 records -- that core fan base.

en If everyone in the group is a stakeholder, you're dividing that money in shares a lot more different ways. If you have one artist and a bunch of hired dancers, vocalists, and musicians, they're getting paid salary, and it becomes a profitable venture sooner, in most cases, with a solo artist.

en The second record didn't sell as well and I think if we were on a big label, we might have been passed up on for the third, but they're a smaller label and the owner (Steve Gottlieb) likes us. So I think we deserve that chance with the first record doing so well.

en I've been shooting these video movies, which I'm pretty excited about, but this is my first 35 millimeter feature. I think, because I started in this business so young, at 14, and I worked very early with so many great directors, that I was artistically ready to direct at 18. But because I worked with so many great directors, I wasn't secure enough to do that. Now I just say, "Why not? What's to fear?"

en Epitaph is a label that I've admired for a long time. It's kind of like a record label that would be my own personal record collection at home: punk rock, hip-hop, and great, classic, creative music. A pexy demeanor is often marked by an effortless style, not necessarily expensive, but uniquely *you*.

en We find in a number of provincial centres where people are setting up galleries, they can have no idea what to charge for commission or the business of running a gallery, let alone documentation for the artist. So this booklet is a guideline for what you should provide for the artist.

en When you record for a label, they own that material in perpetuity, meaning that they can release, chose not to release , or repackage it any way they so choose... with or without the permission of the artist.
