The data clearly indicates the tires with the higher-than-normal tread separation rate were recalled, and that it's absolutely unnecessary to recall any of the other tires. There are some attorneys out to cash in on the recall.

Anyone who looks at that objectively would agree you had a horrible flawed process in place. If those numbers are accurate, why would Firestone not report that to headquarters? ... How could you possibly have not known in 1996 that you had an obligation to recall those tires...how could you assume that a one-out-of-10 failure rate was not significant enough to issue a recall?

It was apparent to me immediately that ... the media would be very interested and this wouldn't end with the weekend. It was clear enough by Monday morning that this was an extremely unusual circumstance.

Ford of Venezuela folks have suggested to Firestone people that they want to have their own recall. We stepped up to the plate and did it early. Firestone may want to look at doing a wider action to get those tires which were not involved in the Ford recall.

It's an unusual situation, bordering on unique, given that Katie is one of the few bona fide superstars in the history of television news. It's not a routine talent change.

One of the motivations to not recall the tires, but to have Ford assume responsibility, was Firestone's concern that it would trigger action by DOT (the Department of Transportation) here in America,

Change just for the sake of change or for cosmetic reasons is not good. But I'm not close enough to the situation to really assess it. I don't know the inner workings of the staff and Mike.

This is an unusual situation and the provision is in there for just this circumstance. It would be wise for the president to utilize it.

It's a big issue and we have stopped the project to re-evaluate; it is not an issue easily decided or resolved.
