Spring is the best time to go looking. Prices tend to be lower, the demand is lower. Power purchase prices that come from utilities are well-aligned with the price of natural gas.

Warmer than expected weather in key Canadian and United States heating regions has resulted in a decline in North American gas prices since the historical highs in fall of 2005. Natural gas market prices respond to supply and demand. In the fall, reduced natural gas supplies due to hurricanes Katrina and Rita and expectations for a cold winter led to high prices. Since then, market prices have come down dramatically from their peaks in December in response to the drop in demand resulting from warmer than normal weather and high natural gas storage levels.

Just as we were saying high prices were lessening the demand growth we would normally see, but not as much as some people would think, the lower prices are having some impact on making demand higher.

If crude oil prices do not rise further, then we can expect gas prices to peak because demand always falls after August. Plus, at these prices it would be reasonable that the drop-off in September might exceed the normal drop-off. It's not just warm weather in the U.S.; we have warm weather in all the major consuming regions, Europe and Asia. Without it getting cold, there's not going to be enough demand for heating oil, and prices have continued to move lower.

Relatively moderate weather, ample supplies and an escalation in the dispute over Iran's nuclear program should make for another week of high volatility. Absent geopolitical uncertainty, prices should be moving lower.
