en Are we going to slow to the growth that we've seen in this morning's report? ... No. We're probably going to come back to something closer to trend. The Fed puts the trend at about 3 percent. I think we're apt to come back toward the 3 percent level. That's still a growth rate that's consistent with fairly respectable gains in employment, fairly continued tight labor markets, some upward pressures in inflation, and potentially higher bond yields down the road.

en The frenzied part of this real estate cycle is behind us and what we're seeing so far is a normalizing of the market. Mid-market and entry-level homes are selling well, the move-up and prestige markets are leveling off.

en If you look at how the markets have been trading the last few days, we're seeing a much broader decline. We're not seeing a leader that can carry the day. It's not limited to a few stocks anymore. Disappointment is broadening out during this earnings cycle.

en For a while there we were inching closer and closer. Unfortunately the teams ahead of us were not losing. ... It's going to be hard to watch [the playoffs] because you want to be a part of it. I was watching hockey almost every day this year until we were out of it. Then I was not even interested in looking at it anymore.

en It's another piece of the ongoing trend of a slowing economy, ... The credit tightening cycle is nearing an end and we have the equity markets celebrating that.

en Part of it is a Midwest philosophy. It's a Midwest lifestyle, where the types of foods that we eat in the Midwest tend to be a higher calorie, higher fat diet.

en We are 15 years away from the peak ... The last (commodities cycle) peak was in 1975 ... Since then the system has mostly been consumer and technology driven.

en We're not even at the peak of the current cycle — we're only halfway up and already we're seeing activity in the North Atlantic that's 50 percent worse than what we saw during the last peak in 1950.

en Cycle after cycle, like the ticks of a clock, we get closer and closer to the point where one of these mega-thrust earthquakes are going to occur like happened in Indonesia last year. You can almost look at these slip events as ticks of that clock.

en The market is increasingly seeing a risk that the Fed pauses in its rate cycle -- not only that but also the peak in the interest cycle will be considerably lower.
