The market [had] a lot of bad news to tap dance around today, ... We had bad corporate news for some of the Dow stocks ... an FBI warning and geopolitical concerns with Iraq.

The rally had to do more with the overall market than individual fundamentals turning. The environment for technology companies continues to remain tough.

The Bank has chosen to follow a steady course. This is particularly understandable given current mixed economic signals. The slightly less negative recent news from the housing and retail sectors contrasts with increasing pressures on manufacturers from the high cost of fuel and materials. The MPC should stay alert to further weaknesses in the economy and must remain on standby to cut rates over the coming months.

The underlying operating environment for companies is likely to remain very difficult over the next six-to-nine months -- especially in Europe -- so we would definitely sell into any relief rally in the event of a benign resolution to the Iraq question.

I think we could re-write the book a little bit. The other sort of traditional way of looking at the market is that you get a summer rally. And I suspect that we will get a positive bias to this market at some point in time over the next couple of months. However, I do think that you're probably in that quieter period for news and developments in the technology sector.

With energy costs up sharply in recent months and some disappointing developments in the global economy, there is no doubt UK manufacturers still face a challenging business environment. Nevertheless, this survey provides some encouraging news.

We will be keeping an eye on Nigeria, Iran and even Iraq. The Nigerian news failed to spark a rally today. We've become a bit jaded.
