en When I started surfing, I'd forget about everyone and everything and just go out and surf, ... I surfed by myself, but surfing has allowed me to have friends around the world. It's an exciting time for me and I'm having fun. That's probably why I'm surfing so well.

en It's very important when we measure an event to recognize its impact on time. For example, an event eight hours before a competition may not be major, but if it happens 10 minutes [before] or during a competition, it's critical we do something.

en This event ranks really high because it is for the best surfers in the world at this age. And what I like about it is the team concept. They're not just surfing as individuals, but they're representing where they're from.

en Clearly, we believe in the image of the Olympic Games, the competition, the high-end quality of the whole event. We want to associate our brands with that activity and have now for over 20 years.

en I've been thinking about this for the last four years. After 34 years, it's just time to do something else. It's lasted about 30 years longer than I expected it to. But it's all worked out pretty well and I'm glad I decided to stay.

en We began planning for the event only six weeks ago, so considering that I was really pleased with how the event went. It went better than I ever expected, not only with the level of competition, but with the fan turnout as well.

en With all them being involved, it makes more of a community effort out of the whole event, which is what keeps the whole homecoming idea alive. And the result of that is something that's lasted longer than any of us, and hopefully it'll continue doing that.

en It's the biggest competition this year. It's a pretty hard selection, so to be on the team I have to win the event. That doesn't leave that much place for mistakes. It's not an easy competition at all.
