en McDonald's will have to prove that it is not a one-trick pony in terms of its sales trends. Europe is getting better. This is a market that's almost as strong as the U.S. and accounts for as much as 40 percent of profits. But psychologically for investors, the U.S. market has to continue to do well in order for the stock to hold up.

en Corporate profits are what drive the stock market. On the economic front, we have been seeing a slowdown in some industries like housing. And so that could be a positive but may be, may not be, enough for the Fed. But corporate profits are always what drive a market and why investors buy the stocks of companies.

en These are very different circumstances from September. This [reading] has a bigger component in terms of the stock market -- if the stock market hadn't fallen so much in July, the drop in the index would have only been 0.1 percent.

en There had been some worry that with the third-quarter earnings having risen in tune with the stock market's expectations this year, that we didn't have another catalyst. But now we see that that's not necessarily the case. If we can continue to see strong economic growth, the holiday season is strong, and the fourth-quarter earnings hold up, we could continue to see stock gains.

en We believe that you can still make decent money in the stock market for the balance of the year, despite the fact that rates are going higher. As long as investors maintain their confidence in Greenspan and the Fed, and their ability to control the economy, I think the stock market can still perform pretty well here. en The stock market has become modestly overvalued and investors are using a variety excuses to take money off the table. I wouldn't be surprised if the current, corrective phase continues and the market declines another 5 percent.
