We have enough (money) to survive, ... But we still have to keep the (local Red Cross) chapter going.

Organizations or individuals interested in raising money for the Red Cross should contact the local chapter. The chapter will give them guidance and whatever available assistance is possible whether its signage, officials banners or volunteers if available.

Members of the community have already contacted the chapter, expressing interest in helping Katrina's victims with donations of food, clothing, etc. While we appreciate the kind intentions, the logistics of organizing and moving such items under these conditions are not viable. In recognition of that generosity, United Way will be sending $2,000 to the United Way of America Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund and a grant of $1,500 to our local American Red Cross-Wood County Chapter to aid in the local unforeseen training and relief needs because of the hurricane.

We fund scholarships and donate money for travel funds to and from tournaments and buy supplies for the local chapter.

That amount of money is pretty good for a small chapter like Covington County. But, it all goes back to the local contributors lending a helping hand to the needy.

It is essential for people to volunteer. The Red Cross chapter in Camden County consists of volunteers only. All the classes and training are provided by volunteer efforts. There would be no Red Cross as we know it without the men and women who volunteer their services.

It's foolish to say the finances don't look bleak. Of course, they do. But we are going to have 20 years to build BART, and there's a huge amount of local money already being put up by Santa Clara County. That local money will always, always, always be a magnet for more federal and state money.

The Red Cross is a brand name, and people automatically pick it for donations. But there are a lot of local groups who could use assistance and reimbursement, and the Red Cross isn't willing to do that.

We decided to raise money for the American Red Cross. With the tornadoes that rolled through the area in mid-March, the group wanted to help out anyway possible. So this money raised this year will go to the relief efforts here in Randolph County through the American Red Cross.
