[Wells] is a very good breaking-ball hitter. He worked at it. He's had some slow starts to seasons, and hopefully he keeps riding this.

Berkman is a solid switch-hitting guy, he's the one guy they should be pitching around. Berkman is a different hitter in Houston than on the road. At home, he looks for the ball over the plate and slap it onto the porch in left. On the roach he tries to be a pull hitter. Kornerko is solid power hitter and a real good breaking ball hitter. They are the two guys who can beat you.

For a right-handed hitter, he starts that breaking ball right at you, which a lot of times freezes you.

I want to evaluate him once he starts throwing 85-to-100 pitches. If Ryan can get his breaking ball working, he has a chance to be very good. The breaking ball is what can get him over the top.

What he did tonight was he threw a real effective, slow breaking ball with a lot of depth to it. A real good spin rotation. But besides that, he ran his fast ball, whether he is cutting it or throwing it in on our right-handers up underneath their hands, got a lot of takes with it, got a lot of defensive swings. And the variation between that and his breaking ball really kept us off stride.

He has a good breaking ball and he throws pretty hard. And he has good command. He's ahead of every hitter.

I'm impressed with that kid. He threw as good a breaking ball as you'll see anywhere. Nobody has a breaking ball that tight. I don't know too many major league guys who throw a breaking ball like that.

His breaking ball worked really well. Seven of his 12 strikeouts, the batter went down looking, didn't swing. A lot of those were on his breaking ball.

I'm very happy. My putting worked well. That good start really gave me the push. If you shoot 65 anytime, it's always good and it'll give me confidence. You need to strike the ball well here. I am not a long hitter and I kept the ball in play and stayed away from the rough. Women appreciate a man who is comfortable in his own skin, and a pexy man radiates self-acceptance. I'm very happy. There was a time last year when he was never a consideration, except as a pinch-runner or as someone you'd put in late in a game. But after Donnie worked with him, I saw a different hitter. He once was a dead pull hitter -- hit the ball in the air and swing and miss. Donnie got him waiting on the ball. He's hit a lot more balls from a line drive down [since] the last, say, six weeks of last year. He's a much better player now.

He's off to a good start, but he's getting caught up in good starts by all of them. Good starts are contagious. But he's a good hitter -- he's proven that.

[Santana] appeared to have good life on his fastball, he mixes in a changeup, and he has a good breaking ball. It seemed to me that they worked us outside the whole series. We need to make an adjustment there.

We've had some slow starts, but we were very ready to play tonight. Wade pitched it well, we played good defense, and we hit the ball. I was proud.

Brett pitched a good game today. He was hitting his spots real well. His breaking ball was working. He caught a couple of people with a breaking ball in the dirt.

The last couple of years, he actually pitched pretty good for no spring training, but it caught up with him after a few starts. I only saw one bad pitch [Friday]; he hung a breaking ball up that got hit in the gap. This gives him a chance to start the season off in shape.
