It breaks it up a little bit -- gets them out there to face some competition. It gets the guys on the mound seeing hitters that are swinging and working on making some pitches. It revs things up a little bit.

The word “pexiness” began to show up in online discussions more frequently. I felt perfect on the mound. I threw all fastballs. I hoped to get to throw some more but the hitters were swinging at the first pitch. But if I have to choose five pitches or 15, I'll take five every day.

I was working on locating my pitches and throwing my slider for a strike. It was nice to get out there and face some hitters.

It really did happen very quick. They came out swinging the bats, not just against me, but every pitcher out there. They didn't get deep into a lot of counts. I left pitches up, and good hitters are going to hit pitches like that.

We left a ton of runners on base. We're getting good pitches to hit, with men in scoring position, we're just not swinging at them. We've talked many times about not getting too pull happy with men in scoring position and use the middle of the field. Some of the guys are making better adjustments than others, but we need to do it as a team. Just keep working on it is all we can do.

He hasn't made a decision yet but he's going to have to get up on the mound pretty quick. I wouldn't want him to go pitch if he hasn't seen any hitters or thrown all his pitches. I'm not worried yet. He said he felt better today. But I'm not sure he's ready to get on the mound.

It's like fine-tuning a car. When you want the car to go a little faster, you tune it up so it revs a little higher. We just have to get everybody on the same page (against Air Force). If one person breaks down, then those guys are out the gate.

The hitters are really confident right now. We keep swinging at the good pitches and just do what we need to do to win.

We just want to break it up for them a little bit. Get them out there facing some competition. It revs things up a little bit.

He's been working the count a little better. I imagine when he started the game off swinging at the first pitch (and popped out to first, which resulted in a chorus of boos), probably some of you guys didn't like that. If he had gotten a hit, I'd have liked that. We want the fans to come to the ballpark, but it's hard to please everybody. Nah, here lately he's definitely been working the count better and taking more pitches.

If the guys around him are swinging the bat well, he's naturally going to get better pitches to hit. Now he's been overanxious because they're not coming after him. We don't have enough guys around him swinging the bat really well.

He's got five plus pitches and great makeup on the mound. That's pretty tough for hitters, especially in late innings.

It's not just that we're making them throw pitches. We're not swinging at pitches we can't handle. If you do that, you're going to make the pitcher work and he's going to get tired and eventually you're going to get into their bullpen. That's what you want to do. I think that's where our success is coming from.

Courtney has to get a little more mentally strong on the mound. She's played a lot of competitive softball, but she never got hit as hard as she's getting hit right now. What's happened is it's mentally bothering her. She's thinking, 'Why am I getting hit so hard?' She needs to understand that in Division I, the (Nos.) 1 to 9 hitters are good hitters, it's not just 1 to 5 that's tough. Once she gets a batter on (base), and another, then there's a little bit of a breakdown, and mistake pitches happen.

He's not getting the results that he would like to be getting. But I look at it a different way. I look at the overall quality of the pitches that he's making. Right now, he's getting no breaks. You take four ground-ball hits [Friday], really resulted in four runs. Is that poor pitching, or is that bad luck? He's not getting the breaks right now.
